In Hitman blood money, how do you use the anaesthetic in the mission 'A New Life'?

I can complete this mission easily and get the silent assassin rating but I cannot work out what the anaesthetic is for. I found the sausage which can be used on the dog with the sedative but what is the anaesthic for and how is it used? Does anyone know?
