Does anyone else find operations worrying?

I am going in to hospital for a hernia operation. The surgeon told me it is a routine operation and there is nothing to worry about. I am concerned as a few years ago, my uncle had a routine operation and got an infection, which killed him. I am also concerned about things like waking up in the middle of the operation, being in pain after, being ill because of the anaesthetic etc. Should I worry or is it straight forward?
