What would have happened to me if blood transfusions didn't exists...?

I gave birth to my baby three days ago and when the placenta didn't come out I began to lose alot of blood, baby is fine but I was put to theatre to get placenta removed manually and then was given a blood transfusion due to the amount of blood lost. I was put under an anaesthetic that makes you sleep durin the whole thing and feel okay now, but I was wondering what would have happened to me if blood transfusions never existed....?
